Tirzepatide UK research update (2026)

What changed for tirzepatide research in the UK during 2025-2026: MHRA position, SURMOUNT-MMO interim data, emerging cardiovascular evidence, and the regulatory picture for compounded supply.

MHRA position in 2026

Tirzepatide remains MHRA-licensed under the Mounjaro brand for two indications in UK clinical use: type 2 diabetes (since 2023) and chronic weight management (extended through 2024). The MHRA continues to flag that compounded or research-grade tirzepatide supplied outside the licensed channels is not a medicine, is not subject to GMP manufacture, and is supplied for laboratory and analytical use only.

SURMOUNT-MMO interim signal

SURMOUNT-MMO is the cardiovascular outcomes trial paralleling SELECT for semaglutide. Interim data presented in late 2025 suggested a directional reduction in major adverse cardiovascular events consistent with the semaglutide CV signal, although the trial has not yet reached its predetermined endpoint count. Final read-out is expected in 2026-2027 and will be the single most important data point for UK clinical positioning.

What this means for UK research

For UK researchers, tirzepatide is now the most-cited modern reference compound in metabolic studies. The breadth of MHRA-licensed indications means substantial NHS-prescribing data is accumulating in parallel with the Phase 3/4 trial programme. For comparative work, tirzepatide is the obvious dual-agonist control arm; for forward-looking work, retatrutide is the comparator to watch.
