Source selection policy
How Metabolic Peptides selects, weights and presents sources. Preferred and excluded source classes, treatment of preprints, conference abstracts, manufacturer disclosures and regulatory documents.
Source hierarchy
- Regulatory documents — MHRA decisions, EMA EPARs, FDA reviews, NICE technology appraisals.
- Peer-reviewed primary trial publications in established journals (NEJM, Lancet, JAMA, BMJ, Nature Medicine, Diabetes Care, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology).
- Trial registry records (ClinicalTrials.gov, ISRCTN, EU CTR).
- Official product information — UK SmPCs, EMA package information, FDA labels.
- Major peer-reviewed systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
- Manufacturer scientific disclosures (investor materials, conference posters) — accepted where peer-reviewed publication is not yet available, with that fact flagged.
- Preprints — flagged explicitly as not yet peer-reviewed.
Excluded or low-trust sources
- Promotional manufacturer content not grounded in published trial data.
- Affiliate-funded review sites and supplier marketing material.
- Anonymised forums, social-media testimonials and influencer claims.
- Aggregator sites that recycle other secondary content without independent verification.
How preprints, conference abstracts and topline releases are handled
- Preprints are cited where they are the best available primary source and flagged as not peer-reviewed.
- Conference abstracts (ADA, EASD, ObesityWeek, AASLD, ESC) are cited with the conference and presentation reference; numerical claims are treated as provisional until full publication.
- Manufacturer topline press releases are noted as topline only; no specific statistics from a topline release are quoted as if they were a full publication.
What we do when sources disagree
- Regulator interpretation takes precedence over sponsor framing.
- Peer-reviewed primary publication takes precedence over secondary reporting.
- Where credible disagreement persists, we state both views and the basis for each.
Last reviewed
Each peptide profile, trial page, mechanism page, safety page and regulatory page carries its own "last reviewed" date. The policy on this page is reviewed at least annually and whenever a structural change to source handling is made.
