Sponsor bias in metabolic drug trials

Why manufacturer-sponsored trials need to be read with care, what mitigations exist, and how to read across registry record, statistical analysis plan and publication.

By Metabolic Peptides Editorial TeamReviewed by Scientific Review PanelLast updated

Pivotal metabolic peptide trials are typically funded and conducted by manufacturers. This is unavoidable in modern drug development; it is also a reason for careful reading.

Where bias creeps in

Trial design (comparator, dose, duration), analysis choices (population, statistical method, missing-data handling), and write-up (which secondary endpoints to feature, how to phrase the headline).

What mitigates it

Pre-registration, publicly available statistical analysis plans, independent regulatory review, and the requirement to file the full data package for marketing authorisation.

Reading practice

Read the published paper alongside the registry record and (where available) the EMA EPAR or FDA review documents. Compare the sponsor's framing with the regulator's framing.

Key takeaways

  • Sponsor-led trials are normal in drug development.
  • Read across registry, regulator and publication for the fullest picture.
What this primer does not provide
  • Formal statistical training.
  • Individual treatment, prescribing or dosing advice.
  • Permission to skip the original publication of any trial cited.
