UK prescription-only medicine — type 2 diabetes
Trulicity (dulaglutide) — UK research guide
Educational UK research guide to Trulicity (dulaglutide for type 2 diabetes): MHRA licence, REWIND cardiovascular outcomes evidence, AWARD phase 3 programme and its role as the active comparator in SURPASS-CVOT.
What Trulicity is
Trulicity is Eli Lilly's once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist for type 2 diabetes glycaemic control. The molecule (dulaglutide) is an Fc-fusion protein with a half-life of approximately 5 days. The full molecule profile is at /peptides/dulaglutide.
Evidence base
The AWARD phase 3 programme established efficacy across multiple T2D populations. REWIND (Lancet 2019) demonstrated MACE reduction in T2D + high CV risk, including a substantial primary-prevention subgroup. SURPASS-CVOT (see /trials/surpass-cvot) used dulaglutide as the active comparator arm against tirzepatide.
Brand vs molecule
Trulicity is the only marketed brand of dulaglutide. The molecule does not have a separate higher-dose anti-obesity formulation. See dulaglutide molecule profile.
FAQs
- What is Trulicity?
- Trulicity is the Eli Lilly brand name for dulaglutide — a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes glycaemic control. It is a long-acting fusion protein combining a modified GLP-1 analogue with a human IgG4 Fc fragment, conferring an extended half-life of approximately 5 days.
- Did Trulicity show cardiovascular benefit?
- Yes, in the REWIND trial: dulaglutide reduced the risk of MACE versus placebo in adults with type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk (including a substantial primary-prevention subset). This established the cardiovascular benefit signal for dulaglutide and informs NICE / NHS pathway decisions.
- Why is Trulicity the comparator in SURPASS-CVOT?
- Because dulaglutide is an active GLP-1 receptor agonist with established cardiovascular outcome evidence in T2D. SURPASS-CVOT was designed to test whether tirzepatide is non-inferior to dulaglutide on MACE-3 in adults with T2D and ASCVD. Non-inferiority versus dulaglutide is not the same as superiority over placebo.
Procurement and supplier position
This page is educational and does not advertise, sell, supply, recommend or rank any supplier, compounder, online pharmacy or telehealth service for Trulicity or any version of dulaglutide. Trulicity is a UK prescription-only medicine.
- REWIND's MACE benefit in T2D does not establish benefit in non-diabetic populations.
- Trulicity is not licensed for weight management.
- Non-inferiority of tirzepatide vs dulaglutide in SURPASS-CVOT is not the same as superiority.
